Dem Bones: 2008: William Castle

TI is happy that American designer William Castle has a career that spans the era of the Mod 60's to the current moment with its Computer Assisted Design aesthetic. Castle's faniciful forms that he pioneered have now been recontextulaized using today's technology. Rather than just re-issue, he rethought which is the big big challenge in design. We worship.

Fabien Baron: Today one jumps between the worlds of art, fashion and entertainment all the time. Designers hire artists to work on their products, while artists want fashion people to be interested in their work, and they both care about fame the way Hollywood cares about fame. Where before these fields were very elitist, today they spread out everywhere. They're interacting more than ever, overlapping and becoming almost one. Interview will represent that. We can make a special fashion issue and be believable, or make a special art issue and be believable, or do entertainment.

Lee Carter: It seems like that's what Andy would've wanted.

Fabien Baron: And it's what he did very well. He was able to mix glamorous and trendy on the same page, to show the worlds together as one. We can be the ambassadors of this vision.

For TI Ross Lovegrove is a great, great designer of the 21st century. At "Flexibility: Design In A Fast Changing Society at the Ex Carceri "Le Nuove" in Turin , Lovegrove contributed a rotating metal sculpture that beamed light throughout the room. The Steelwood Chair 2008 by the Bouroullec Brothers

TI saw the "Steelwood" chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec floating in the window of the MOMA design store on Spring Street and stopped dead in his idle tracks. Organic bonded to inorganic. Warmth fused with coldness. Romance and technology. If this isn't the chair of 2008 then I can't imagine what is! And affordable too with prices hovering around $530. Very instant collectible!
