"My dialogue with African art derives from the conviction that artistic creation arises from a common fund of humanity and that in the discovery of aesthetic solutions the making of masterpieces supersedes regions, cultures, and becomes part of the treasures from all places and all times of human creation. “My entrance into the art world was through the counter-culture, where it was common practice to lift material from mass culture and ‘pervert’ it to reverse or alter its meaning… Mass culture is scrutinized to discover what is hidden, repressed, within it.”

Paola Pivi, I love you. I've been following you for sometime now, a little bit like a groupie and somewhat like a kid following a circus. Your circus is usually populated by the most fantastic menagerie of exotic animals doing hilariously domestic things. Like a leopard knocked out from sipping too many cups of tea from leopard rimmed tea-cups for instance. Apart from being accessible and appropriate for all ages, I love your wry, dry sense of humor. The best thing an adult can retain from childhood is a sense of mischief and of play. Your art is rife with that. I'm so happy that you are the inaugural artist in the New York Galerie Perrotin space. I love that Emmanuel kept the French spelling for the American market. I mean it took me a while to stop misspelling it as "galarie" in my posts but that's process right?...Make the mistake...and thus learn from trying.

Good artists are also good thinkers: visual philosophers of a kind.Good artists are also good thinkers: visual philosophers of a kind.

Once at a dinner with a group of artists, I expressed embarrassment at my profession in fashion. Mr. Matthew Day Jackson advised me to stop stuttering and own up to the function . I think about that whenever I see his work.
