Masoyoshi Sukita's evocation of the Punked Out 70's
Remember that legendary photograph on the cover of Bowie's "Heroes"? Masoyoshi Sukita. Yellow Magic Orchestra in Communist era red in an acid green space? Masoyoshi Sukita. Of the 300 images that comprise the retrospective of this Japanese photographer's work, the range of subjects races from iconic Western musicians to cultural figures such as Shuji Terayama and Kaela Kimura.
As my charming escort through this exhibit pointed out, Sukita's images hit their nadir somewhere between his collaboration with Mr Bowie and his intimate documentation of the 70's New York punk scene. That was a time when the world was melting down and artists used the opportunity of the chaos to swim in new channels. 1977 seems like eons away now but the grain of Sukita's black and whites, posed against the burn of his color prove that his signature eye was a timeless proposition.
