WHO's On First?

Raquel Zimmerman: V: Inez and Vinoodh Sasha Pivovora: Vogue Italia: MeiselRaquel Zimmerman: V: Inez and Vinoodh Sasha Pivovora: Vogue Italia: Meisel

There's an interesting showdown brewing over at MDC. General agreement among the clients and contacts feeding us info at the day job is Gemma Ward has pretty much transcended her No 1 slot on the Top 50 since she now behaves in that iconic way of working at her leisure. For that, you can't blame a girl who's been treading the mills from age 15 ! The big Q is who inherits her spot as No 1? My phones are lighting up with advocates for two frontrunners, IMG's artistic Russian Sasha Pivovora and the eternal Brazilian must-have, Raquel Zimmerman. Right now it is a deadlock so it would be fun to get some feedback from the commited modelwatchers out there. Here are the relative pros and cons of our two contenders.

ARGUMENTS FOR RAQUEL:
1. The girl, after working tirelessly for the last 7 years deserves No 1 by merit of her track record , her proven longevity and her body of work. In other words Raquel's 7 years beats Sasha's 3.
2.As a physical presence in both runway shows and in photo-shoots, Raquel looms as the better model in terms of emotional range, body type and editorial versatility.
3.Raquel connects to the entire idea of fashion, is a great backstage politician and by stint of her warm and charismatic personality has kept a wide range of clients , from Vogue to Fendi to Chloe to Valentino (SS08 if she's in the final edit) in the past 5 years

ARGUMENTS AGAINST RAQUEL:
1. No standout, long term make-up contract or multi-million dollar client commitment as seen in the likes of former No 1's like Daria, Liya, Karolina, Gisele or Angela. In other words, a great seasonal fashion model but not a contract model.
2.Obvious money bookings for department store catalogues has kept Raquel's booking record from being nearly as immaculate as Sasha's who has been nothing but exclusive, exclusive, exclusive, her ENTIRE career
3.At least the current No 1, Gemma has made an effort at being a public figure in her forays into Hollywood, her Vanity Fair booking with George Clooney and her general air of mystery. Raquel it is argued would be the most "anoymous" model out of a generation of painfully anoymous models to hit No 1.

ARGUMENTS FOR SASHA
1. Her run as THE face of Prada for two and a half years in a row is unprecedented . Given the power of Prada as a star making vehicle, this fact marks Sasha as a historic model on the level of the Angela Lindvalls and the Amber Valettas as long term faces of the house.
2.Sasha's booking record is crystal clear, ultra-blue chip and as immaculate as immaculate can be. There has never been a dip in the quality of her jobs, unlike the ambigious state of Raquel Zimmerman's career prior to the moment when she opened the FW 04 Prada show.
3. Sasha has a far better track history as a cover model, including four covers in Sept 07 (British, Japanese and Russian Vogue+Numero) alone, not to mention 3 recent covers of Italian Vogue and apparently, there are still even more cover level bookings in her cycle.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST SASHA
1.One brand alone should not make a model No 1 at MDC. Until Sasha goes into a post Prada-exclusive booking cycle her career potential cannot be fully evaluated. Will she be coveted by Chanel, Valentino, Dior, Vuitton etc after being so long associated only with Prada? The long term alignment for instance with Calvin has not seen Natalia Vodianova become red hot with subsequent campaign clients. (Not that, for the record, Natalia gives a damn).
2.As with Raquel, Sasha boasts no long term multi-million cosmetic/fragrance/VS contract on the order of a former No 1 like Gisele. If she gets this anytime soon however, Sasha would automatically graduate to the No 1 slot regardless of who might have preceded her in the ranking.
3.Simply put, haters complain that Sasha is too short and therefore not an ideal couture or editorial icon in the way that Raquel is. Sasha is accused of being a "cold and beautiful face and nothing else" This con I'd question though and Exhibit No 1 would be the iconic career of another 'Too Short" legend, Kate Moss.

Well these are the facts as they have been presented. What do you think kids?

RAQUEL IS

FINALLY SHE IS THE NUMBER ONE MODEL, AND SHE DESERVED IT . SHE IS EVERYWHERE AND I NEVER GET TIRED OF HER, HERE IS THE NEW NUMBER ONE MODEL ;)

Katie

I really don't find Raquel particularly appealing. I would never call her a 'classic beauty'. While Sasha isn't either, she makes up for it in her editorials. I think that Sasha is one of the best editorial models out there. In actuality, I didn't even like Sasha until I saw her editorial work. Her amazing ability to look completely different in each editorial won me over. Plus, I think that Sasha looks fresher than Raquel.

I'd go with Raquel

Someone mentioned Gemma's Calvin Klein fragance contract. How about Raquel's contracts for Fendi "Palazzo" fragance and Gucci by Gucci fragance, which even has a tv commercial, which gives Raquel's face more fame. And Fendi "Palazzo" is the first Fendi fragance in a long time, it's only-girl and Fendi is making a big deal out of it, there's a lot of advertising around.
Sasha is more versatile? She has an edgy look that barely looks classical, Raquel would appeal to anyone as a classical beauty and she can do edgy on editorials.

Raquel for Number 1

Shes's great. Sexy, modern, fierce!!!

What ever a model nead to be...She's a face for the greatest brands of haute fashion, like Valentino, Dior, Chanel, ChloƩ, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Versace..and others!!!

She's Gorgeous!!!!!!!

Raquel is so boring!

Raquel COMPLETELY lacks the kind of star quality I'd like to see in the top ranked girl. Yes, she has been around forever, which is quite the accomplishment, and yes, she has booked numerous campaigns over the years. But she has always just "been there". Never been THE girl, and never a true standout in my eyes.

I don't find Raquel particularly versatile either. She has a diverse list of clients, but her print work bores me to tears at times. I feel like people praise her versatility without looking at the actual work, just because she's so professional (and nice!), and easy to work with. At any rate, Sasha's editorial qualities are far superior.

Neither of them would make a perfect no 1, but if it's between these two, I'd go with Sasha. She may be a one-brand girl (and no, her Armani cosmetics campaign doesn't really count), but that's also what makes her a very exclusive top player. Who knows what will happen Post Prada, but as of now, her star shines much brighter than Raquel's.

Sasha is my pick

Sasha is # 1. Her beauty is unique, and her presence is phenomenally strong. The editorial work is beyond compare. Her Vogue India ed was was of the highest quality of I have seen in years. But to me, her versatility (hard edge, soft edge, main-stream sexiness, commercial beauty, etc.) is what makes Sasha an undisputed #1 in my mind.

sasha number one

sasha definitely deserves to be the number one in the whole planete...

sasha is more versatile and

sasha is more versatile and way more interesting than raquel........hands down sasha

Raquel for number 1!

Arguments against Sasha are bigger! She can't get to #1 only being the face of 1 brand! Raquel has done innumerous campaigns! Though Raquel doesn't have as many covers, she was still on the cover of Vogue US, Vogue Brazil, V Magazine twice, Elle Brazil, Elle Korea, Elle France, I know Elle is not HUGE but it's something. Not to mention 3 only-girl campaigns for Fendi! Described as a best client on Angela's icon description.

Raquel has campaigned for such brands as: Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga, Hermes, Gucci, Dior, Chloe, Max Mara, Versace, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Animale, Hugo Boss, Escada, H&M, Emanuel Ungaro, Valentino...
Even though she doesn't have as many covers as Sasha has had lately, she was on the cover of Vogue(US, Brazil, Germany, Russia, Italy, Paris(Supplement)), Numero, Self-Service, French, Elle, Marie Claire etc.

And Sasha is like Gemma's twin, let Gemma's dust settle until Sasha hits #1...

Interesting

Raquel seems strong on overall campaigns and editorials but weak on covers. Sasha is consistent (via Prada), stronger on covers but weaker on the runway. But how much do runways matter anymore? I like yr point abt Angela and Fendi/Only Girl. Never thought about that. How do you feel though, about neither girl having a multi-million dollar contract? They would be the first No 1's w/o this . (Gemma had a huge contract for Obsession Night fragrance though I haven't seen it running anywhere recently). TI

Me again

Well, I think Raquel's Fendi "Palazzo" fragance is pretty big, I don't know how much she earned but it was probably a lot. And it's not a coincidence the last 2 No 1's were Karl Lagerfeld's favorites, Daria(A lot of Chanel campaigns) and Gemma(A lot of Lagerfeld gallery campaigns), and now Raquel is getting a lot of Fendi campaigns. I don't doubt if her longevity goes as far as Angela's and Carmen's.
I can totally see Raquel getting a cosmetics contract sometime. She's done cosmetics ads for Christian Dior 3 times, YSL, Versace 2 times, MAC and Bobby Brown cosmetics...

For me 2 things are facts that can't be seen in any other way. Raquel's 7 years beats Sasha's 3. And a model can't get to No 1 being the face of only one brand.

Raquel as Number One

Isn;t she meant to be repeating Fendi for the third season, that isn't as much as sashas record but still thats a constant booking..

thanks wayne for posting this v interesting item!

Whos on First?

I'd love to see Raquel, just because she deserves it.
in an ideal world they should both be number one.

I love Raquel but Sasha is the winner even if she has a bad walk
