Boy meets countryhouse...falls in love with country house and so on in Waugh's Brideshead Revisited
TI's off to see the new film based on Waugh's immortal "Brideshead Revisted". I'm bracing myself to hate it, since the new script takes serious liberties with the novel (like placing Julia in Venice with the boys..sacrilege). But they say Ben Whishaw's "Sebastian" is a masterful performance, so here's to an open mind. The biggest hope is that director Julian Jarrod will catch that wonderful sub-text in the novel: the idea that "Brideshead Revisited" is really the love story between a boy and country house. If the film sucks I'll re-read the ending of the novel for comfort tonight.

you never ever told us what
you never ever told us what you thought!
I thought is was terrible..
Heavy handed, crude, tacky, the script butchered the book...created weird plot lines that never existed and missed the sub-text about the death of England's aristocratic culture after WW II. Poor Emma Thompson. She did try.
