The Dreamers by Bertolucci is an instant classic
I saw "The Dreamers" when it was first released in the theaters and fought it the whole way through the screening . "Ah...more nostalgia for the unremembered 60's...more rose-tinted musing about days of wine and roses...the peons to lost youth and lost youthful ideal...:." I sniped in my mind. At the time I was very disrespectful of the film's intentions and inspirations. Well now that we've survived all the 40th anniversary celebrations of 'the events of 68"...now that "The Conformist: and "The Last Emperor" are finally on DVD, I can truthfully say I came back to "The Dreamers" and found myself humbled. I won't throw the word "masterpiece" around but in its handling of the small details and the intimacies of that life lived in the late 60's in Paris, "The Dreamers" is very masterful. One of my favorite aspects of this movie is how it distills the whole"romance" of living in Paris, into something quite [potent and fermented. Passionate as opposed to cynical, artfully beautiful and deeply expressive, the best thing about this film is it proves that a great director can go into his late period and forge work every inch as relevant as his early breakthroughs. I'm so very grateful that Bertolucci made this film! And look at what a huge star leading lady Eva Green is these days!

These three characters were so enthralling. Louis Garrel should be commended especially at such a young age for being able to handle so adeptly the scripting and small nuances of being a young man in love with your sister. He made it seem almost warranted. Well, given the spellbindig beauty of Eva (those eyes!) it's easy to fall in love.
love triangle
this triangle relationship really fascinates me
i always dreamt about being part of something like that
even that is somehow destructable and without prospects...

what and why
are you all mad? this film is an awful, self indulgent cinemaphile fuck fest! I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a classic because it follows the same trajectory of a lot 'classics'.....I think we have had enough of the oppressive dirty old men who monopolize cinema.
